If you suffer from insomnia you will know just how debilitating it can be. You will suffer from constant tiredness which will inevitably cause a drop in your performance at work, cause you to be irritable which may affect your relationships and will make you more prone to accidents. Many people will use herbal remedies which have been shown to be very effective in helping overcome insomnia. But which are the best sleep remedies?

Amongst the commonly used herbal remedy is valerian. This is usually sold in capsules rather than in its natural form as many people find the smell, and indeed the taste, to be rather unpleasant. The capsules are actually made from the root of the plant and have been found to have sedative effects and can help relieve anxiety. Unlike some prescribed medication, valerian does not lose its effects over time.

Valerian can have some side-effects for some people including stomach cramps, headaches and dizziness.

Another herbal remedy for insomnia, and certain a contender among the best sleep remedies, is lavender. This has been used in many forms for centuries and the many ways in which it can be used is certainly one of its strengths. Many people like consume it as a “tea” brewed from flowers in hot water. This should be drunk about an hour before going to bed and will have a general calming effect.

Another popular way of using it is to make up a sachet of lavender which is then put under the pillow. The scent that is released through the night will have a soothing effect and aids sleep. An alternative is simply to use a lavender spray which is released over the sleeping area. Or, if you prefer, a lavender essential oil is available which can be used either in an oil burner or added to massage oil.

Some people can exhibit an allergic reaction to lavender (more usually to the actual flowers rather than the oil), so if you are such a person then obviously you should exercise caution.

What I have highlighted here are two of what I have found to be the two best sleep remedies. However, what works best tends to vary from one person to the next, so it is really a matter of finding what works best for you.
